We’re excited to announce the launch of the HOPE Support Group, a new monthly gathering aimed at creating a supportive community for those affected by hearing loss. Whether you are experiencing hearing loss, supporting someone who is, or simply want to learn more about hearing challenges, this group is open to everyone. Meetings will be held on the first Friday of each month.
In these meetings, you’ll have the chance to share your experiences, discuss the challenges and successes you’ve encountered, and receive valuable feedback from others who truly understand. It’s a safe space where you can connect with people who are facing similar situations and offer support to one another.
No registration is required, so feel free to come and join us when you can. We look forward to building a caring and encouraging community together.
Communication Tips for Those with Hearing Loss:
- State upfront that you have hearing loss. Most people appreciate this because it helps them communicate more effectively. For example, “Hi, I’m Sara. I have hearing loss. Please speak slowly and clearly.”
- Clarify instead of asking for repetition. Instead of saying, “What?” try, “You said we’re meeting at what time—3:00 or 4:00?”
Communication Tips for Speaking to Someone with Hearing Loss:
- Face the person you are speaking to. Avoid talking from another room.
- Ensure good lighting. Make sure there’s light on your face so your expressions and mouth are visible.
- Speak slowly and clearly.
- Rephrase if needed. If the person doesn’t understand, try rephrasing instead of repeating the same words.
We hope to see you at the next HOPE Support Group meeting! Together, we can create a stronger, more inclusive community for those affected by hearing loss.
