Volunteer Spotlight – Nancy Malcolm

Volunteer Spotlight – Nancy Malcolm

For Nancy, Vivalon Rides relieved a lot of her stress. Her father would take our shuttles to play bridge, which provided him with a safe and reliable way to continue playing a game he loved.

Wanting to give the same positive experience to others, Nancy became one of the first volunteers for a brand-new program at Vivalon called CarePool in 2015. Through CarePool, people age 65 or older who can no longer drive receive free rides to grocery stores and medical appointments from kind volunteers like Nancy.

She has many regular riders, like Cecile, who told us, “Nancy has a great personality. Every outing is fun, and she is so giving.” Norman was another regular. He and Nancy had their first ride together back in 2016, and for four years Nancy drove him to the grocery store and back again until he could no longer leave his house. Shortly after their last trip together, Nancy called Norman to check in on him and asked if anyone was looking after him. He told her “no,” and she responded, “I am.” Ever since then, she’s been delivering groceries to his house every Friday.

In the seven years since she started, Nancy has helped so many different people just like Cecile and Norman. She keeps a busy schedule and is committed to supporting folks in her community. It’s because of this immense compassion and the invaluable connection she provides that Nancy was nominated for the Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership’s Volunteer of the Year award—a recognition we believe she truly deserves.

You can make a difference like Nancy as a CarePool volunteer driver. Providing a ride to medical appointments or the grocery store for someone who can no longer drive can change their life. Learn more this volunteer opportunity and sign up here.
