About the Artist
Amy Sherald is a leading contemporary portrait artist known for her distinctive style and thoughtful exploration of identity. She gained national recognition for her portrait of Michelle Obama, which became an iconic image of modern portraiture.
Sherald often uses grayscale tones to depict skin, a deliberate choice that shifts focus to the individuality of her subjects while challenging traditional expectations of representation.
Her work reflects a commitment to visibility and humanity, particularly for those whose stories have too often been overlooked. In creating Trans Forming Liberty, Sherald invites viewers to consider who is represented in our shared symbols—and who has yet to be fully seen.
