In recognition of Juneteenth, this month’s luncheon honors the spirit of gathering, resilience, and cultural expression.
We’ll explore Homecoming by Ernie Barnes, a work that captures the energy, movement, and connection found in shared moments. Barnes’ figures are expressive and full of life, reflecting not only his personal experiences but a broader celebration of Black American culture and community. The afternoon is accompanied by live music from Tony Saunders, bringing rhythm and atmosphere to a vibrant, communal experience.

About the Artist
Ernie Barnes was an American artist whose work is known for its distinctive, elongated figures and sense of movement. Born in North Carolina during the era of segregation, Barnes drew deeply from his lived experience, portraying scenes of daily life, joy, and community.
His painting The Sugar Shack became an iconic image of Black American culture, appearing on the television show Good Times and the cover of I Want You by Marvin Gaye.
Barnes’ work is often associated with the Black Romantic tradition, celebrating the beauty, resilience, and vitality of Black life.
