Martha Giblas began volunteering with Vivalon’s Meals on Wheels program in 2018 and has since volunteered over 150 hours. On her search for finding meaningful volunteer work, she found Vivalon and was excited by the Meals on Wheels program. In her many years here, she has enjoyed forming relationships with her clients and looks forward to seeing them every week. Martha also volunteers for other organizations in Marin and is passionate about staying healthy, reducing car traffic, and advocating for clean energy. In her free time, she enjoys staying active outdoors with activities such as cycling, hiking, gardening and bird watching.

1. How long have you been volunteering at Vivalon?

I started delivering with Meals on Wheels about 2 years before Covid and had to stop when they suspended deliveries. I started back up when it was safe and have been delivering ever since.

2. What brought you to Vivalon?

I had heard of Vivalon, wanted to do some meaningful volunteering, and had an interview. I found that there were numerous opportunities and chose delivering meals. I’m so glad I did as I have thoroughly enjoyed forming relationships with my wonderful and unique clients and look forward to seeing them every week.

3. Who is your hero?

Erika Vaughn, the Meals on Wheels Programs Manager, has helped me so much, is so caring and helpful for these folks, and is my hero.

4. What did you do prior to volunteering?

Before retiring I worked as a Speech Pathologist for various Marin County public schools. In addition, I worked as a personal fitness trainer for several years after retirement.

5. What was your favorite movie as a child?

As a child growing up in the 50s, I didn’t watch much television or movies. We mainly played outside. As we got older, we played ball sports with neighborhood friends.

6. What makes you unique?

I enjoy outdoor activities such as cycling, hiking, gardening, and birdwatching. Activities such as reading, cooking, and yoga occupy some of my time indoors.

7. What is a fun fact about you?

I paddle a 6-person outrigger canoe in San Francisco!

8. What is your favorite place on earth?

Although I love traveling, one of my favorite places on Earth is conveniently close to home, Mount Tamalpais.

9. What is something you wish you were better at?

Technology is one of my challenges and often on my mind to improve my knowledge and use.

10. Who is your favorite celebrity?

Steph Curry. He is an amazing athlete and gives back to the community in a big way.
