June 2024 Celebrating Milestones – Gerry Shannon

June 2024 Celebrating Milestones - Gerry Shannon
Meet Gerry Shannon

Gerry is a retired San Francisco Firefighter who was recognized for his work after the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake. After a 2-hour rescue following the earthquake, Gerry saved Sherra Cox, an office manager who came home early to watch the World Series game on television. Her apartment building had collapsed, trapping her under heavy structural beams. Gerry chain sawed his way to Sherra through floor joists, going through multiple saw blades in a tight 2-foot crawl space, and eventually got her to safety.

Although very humble when you meet him, Gerry was issued the highest honor at the San Francisco Fire Department, the Scannell Medal along with many other great achievements.

Years later, Gerry moved to Marin County and began his spiritual journey. This led him to Spirit Rock in West Marin, a Thailand monastery, silent retreats in the Mojave Desert, sitting with the Dalai Lama in Nepal and Tibert, and now, a special part of his house sectioned off for meditation. As a practicing Buddhist, Gerry is dedicated to the present, not the past.

Gerry Shannon began volunteering for Meals on Wheels on December 15, 2021, and his commitment to the clients he serves is honorable. He has volunteered for more than 1,100 hours – the equivalent of about 1 and a half months. Gerry states the reason he loves to volunteer is because: “I wanted to do something to give back…and I didn’t expect it to be so fulfilling, but I enjoy delivering the meals and the clients that are on the program.” From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank Gerry for all he does for our community.

Gerry is a true inspiration and a pleasure to have as a dedicated Vivalon volunteer!
